Workflow · generative search evidence

Build evidence a person can inspect—even if no AI system cites it.

GEO is useful here as an evidence and answerability discipline. It does not mean reverse-engineering hidden retrieval, adding special AI markup, or promising citations.

The operational question

For each plausible fanout branch, ask which claim must be supported, which source role can support it, and which canonical page should own the explanation. The output is page work and evidence work—not an imitation of a model trace.

The platform boundary

Google states that its established SEO fundamentals remain relevant for AI features and that no special schema or AI text file is required. Eligibility never guarantees crawling, indexing, visibility, or citation.

Evidence register

Give every important claim an owner and a failure condition.

FieldRecordDecision use
Reader jobLearn, compare, evaluate, implement, troubleshoot, or verify.Prevents question variants from becoming separate pages by default.
ClaimExact bounded statement, date, geography, product state, and exceptions.Defines what the evidence actually needs to support.
Source rolePrimary documentation, research, expert guidance, firsthand case, comparison data, or community evidence.Matches evidence type to claim type.
Page ownerCurrent canonical URL and visible promise.Determines section, extension, merge, asset, new URL, or no action.
Correction ownerPerson, review trigger, and expiry condition.Keeps time-sensitive evidence maintainable.

Strengthen the canonical page when…

  • The branch supports the same primary outcome.
  • The evidence has the same owner and update cadence.
  • The reader’s next step remains unchanged.
  • A separate page would repeat the parent’s explanation.

Build a separate evidence asset when…

  • The method, dataset, test, or comparison is useful independently.
  • Its provenance and limitations need substantial space.
  • It changes on a different schedule.
  • Other pages can cite the asset naturally without duplicating it.

Technical gate

Make the evidence crawlable, visible, and congruent.

Keep important explanations in textual content, connect them with crawlable internal links, and ensure structured data represents what readers can actually see. Schema can describe a page; it cannot manufacture trust or guarantee a search feature.
